Kenduri Doa Selamat: Running Order & Preparation List

A kenduri doa selamat is a short gathering held to ask for blessings — usually after moving into a new home, fulfilling a vow, or ahead of a major event such as a wedding. It rarely runs beyond two hours. This guide covers when it is held, the running order from arrival to the meal, and what you need to prepare.

When people hold a kenduri doa selamat

A kenduri doa selamat is not tied to one particular occasion. It is held whenever a family wants to ask for blessings or express gratitude, and the scale can be anything from ten neighbours to a hundred guests.

  • After moving into a new home — the most common reason in Malaysia.
  • As a kenduri kesyukuran after a success, a birth, or a return from Hajj or Umrah.
  • To fulfil a vow that was made earlier.
  • A few days before a wedding, as a doa selamat for the couple and both families.
  • After recovering from illness or coming through a difficult event.
  • On particular nights in the Islamic calendar, combined with a Yasin recitation with neighbours.

The running order

The order is simple and barely varies from house to house. The whole thing usually runs an hour and a half to two hours.

  1. 1

    Welcoming guests

Guests arrive and are seated, usually after Maghrib or after Asar. Drinks and light snacks are served while everyone gathers.

  2. 2

    Yasin or tahlil recitation

Led by the imam, an invited ustaz, or a designated family member. This part typically takes twenty to thirty minutes.

  3. 3

    The doa selamat

The prayer is offered according to the purpose of the gathering — blessings on a new home, gratitude, or safety for a couple. The host states the intention briefly before it begins.

  4. 4

    The meal

Food is served as soon as the prayer ends. Most guests head home within about forty-five minutes of the meal starting.

Guest count and how much food

The guest count drives almost every other cost, so settle that number before you call a caterer.

  • Count one full portion per adult and half a portion per child under twelve.
  • Add ten percent on top — guests who never confirmed will still turn up.
  • The usual menu: nasi minyak or nasi beriani, a meat or chicken dish or two, a vegetable, acar, and air sirap.
  • Under thirty guests, cooking yourself is still practical; beyond that, catering usually costs less once effort and ingredients are counted.
  • Provide takeaway containers — it cuts waste substantially.

Preparation checklist

Most kenduri doa selamat can be organised within one to two weeks.

  • Fix the date and time — after Maghrib on a weekend is easiest for most guests to attend.
  • Contact the imam or ustaz as early as you can, particularly for a Thursday night.
  • Prepare prayer mats, Yasin copies, and a speaker if the guest count is large.
  • Arrange the seating and mark out separate areas for men and women if needed.
  • Book the caterer, or settle the menu and shopping list, at least a week ahead.
  • Tell the neighbours even if they are not formally invited — it makes parking far easier.

How to send the invitations

A kenduri doa selamat is often arranged at short notice, so printed cards rarely make it in time. Most families invite over WhatsApp, but a plain text message sinks quickly in a busy family group.

A digital invitation solves both problems at once: it looks as formal as a real card, and it carries directions and RSVP in the same link. You get an accurate headcount for the caterer without having to ask people one by one.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a kenduri doa selamat last?

An hour and a half to two hours is plenty. The Yasin or tahlil recitation takes twenty to thirty minutes, followed by the doa selamat, and the rest is the meal.

What time is best?

After Maghrib on a weekend is the easiest for most guests to attend. After Asar is also common for a simpler daytime gathering.

Do we need to invite an ustaz to lead the recitation?

Not necessarily. The surau imam, an invited ustaz, or any family member who reads well can lead it. For larger gatherings, inviting the surau imam is the usual practice.

How far ahead should invitations go out?

One to two weeks before the date is enough for a kenduri at home. If many guests need to travel, give them three to four weeks.
