In Malaysia, wedding season is the school holidays. Families travel back to the kampung, cousins can come without pulling children out of class, and nearly every Saturday in those weeks has a khemah up somewhere on your street. KPM's 2027 calendar has four breaks: early March around Raya, late May to early June, the end of August into September, and December. Here are the exact dates for both school groups, the weekends inside each one, and what a peak-season date really costs you.

Kumpulan A is Kedah, Kelantan and Terengganu. Kumpulan B is every other state and federal territory, including Sabah and Sarawak. Group A's breaks start a day earlier.
| Break | Kumpulan A | Kumpulan B |
|---|---|---|
| Term 1 | 5 to 13 March | 6 to 14 March |
| Mid-year | 21 May to 5 June | 22 May to 6 June |
| Term 2 | 27 August to 4 September | 28 August to 5 September |
| Year end | 3 to 31 December | 4 to 31 December |
Hari Raya Aidilfitri is expected on Wednesday, 10 March 2027, in the middle of the first-term break. The month before is Ramadan, and very few families hold a wedding kenduri while fasting. So March is not really a wedding window. The weekends after Raya fill with open houses instead.
Couples who want the March break usually do a small nikah during Syawal and keep the big reception for later in the year. If that is your plan, the kad raya and the save the date can go out together.
Hari Raya Haji is expected on Monday, 17 May 2027, just before the mid-year break. Kedah, Kelantan, Perlis and Terengganu get Tuesday the 18th as well. Then the schools close for more than two weeks. For Kumpulan B that gives three weekends: 22 and 23 May, 29 and 30 May, and 5 and 6 June.
Awal Muharram falls on Sunday, 6 June. Some families prefer not to hold a kenduri on the first of Muharram and others do not mind, so ask your elders before you book that last weekend. In Sarawak, Hari Gawai on 1 and 2 June sits in the middle of the break, and many guests will be at their own celebrations.
The term-two break runs from 28 August to 5 September for Kumpulan B, and Merdeka Day falls on Tuesday, 31 August. Plenty of people will take Monday the 30th off and turn it into a four-day weekend, which is good for guests travelling from another state and bad for anyone hoping for a quiet hall.
This break is short, with two weekends. It suits couples who want a holiday date but cannot face December prices.
Four weeks of holiday, year-end bonuses in the bank, relatives home from overseas. December is when most of Malaysia gets married, and vendors know it. Expect peak rates from halls, caterers, mak andam and photographers, and expect your guests to have two or three kenduri on the same Saturday.
On the east coast, December is also the northeast monsoon. Kelantan, Terengganu and Pahang see heavy rain and often floods at this time of year. If your majlis is outdoors or in a kampung prone to flooding, have a hall as a backup or pick another month.
The obvious cost is money. Vendors charge more in school holidays, and the popular ones can be gone a year ahead. If you want 18 December 2027, the time to book the hall is now, in late 2026.
The less obvious cost is attendance. On a December Saturday, your guests are choosing between you and the cousin, the colleague and the neighbour's son. They will come for an hour, eat, and leave for the next khemah. Fewer RSVPs come back, and more confirmed guests do not turn up. Send your card six to eight weeks out, not the usual four, and ask for a headcount with a firm closing date.
The first weekend of every holiday is the most contested. The second or third gets you the same travelling relatives with fewer clashes.
A Monday holiday in Johor or a Friday weekend in Kelantan changes who can come. Check where most of your guests live, not only the venue.
Three to four months before a holiday date, so people can block it before their own family weddings land.
In peak season, replies drift in until the final week. Agree a final headcount date with the caterer that leaves room for that.
Once you have the window, the specific day is the fun part. Some couples want a date with a pattern, others want whatever weekend their imam and their caterer both have free. We list the patterned dates in 2027 and the weekends they fall on in our guide to tarikh cantik for weddings.
For Kumpulan B: 6 to 14 March, 22 May to 6 June, 28 August to 5 September and 4 to 31 December. Kumpulan A (Kedah, Kelantan, Terengganu) starts each break one day earlier.
Mostly the school holidays, with December the busiest month, followed by the mid-year break in late May and early June.
It makes travel easier for families with children, but vendors charge peak rates and guests often have several kenduri on the same day. Book early and send cards six to eight weeks ahead.
Hari Raya Aidilfitri is expected on 10 March, Hari Raya Haji on 17 May, Awal Muharram on 6 June, Hari Gawai on 1 and 2 June in Sarawak, and Merdeka on 31 August.
As early as you can, ideally by the end of 2026. Popular halls and caterers can have their December weekends taken a year in advance.
