Malay Engagement Customs: Merisik, Meminang and the Engagement Majlis

Malay engagement custom moves through three stages — merisik to ask, meminang to formally propose, and bertunang to seal it. All three are now often combined into a single majlis on the same day. This guide covers the order of the customs, who needs to be there, the engagement hantaran, and a practical engagement length.

The order: merisik, meminang, bertunang

Traditionally these three stages happened on separate days, sometimes months apart. Today most families combine the meminang and the bertunang into one majlis, with the merisik handled informally through family conversation.

  1. 1

    Merisik

A representative of the groom's family discreetly asks whether the woman is already spoken for. This once went through an intermediary; these days a direct conversation between the two families is usually enough.

  2. 2

    Meminang

The groom's family comes formally to propose. This is where the date, the mas kahwin, the number of hantaran trays and the scale of the majlis are negotiated and agreed.

  3. 3

    Bertunang

The ring is placed on the bride-to-be's finger by the mother or a female representative of the groom's family, witnessed by both families. Hantaran is exchanged and a prayer is offered.

Who attends, and the role of the family spokesperson

An engagement majlis is usually small and private — twenty to fifty people drawn from both families. It is not an open event the way a wedding kenduri is.

The negotiation is conducted by each side's spokesperson, typically an uncle or an older relative used to speaking on the family's behalf. The couple themselves rarely speak during the negotiation; their part begins once agreement is reached.

Engagement hantaran

Engagement hantaran is simpler than the wedding version — usually just three to five trays, since the full set is saved for the akad.

  • Sirih junjung as the centrepiece, the same as at a wedding.
  • The engagement ring in a decorated box — the most important tray of the day.
  • A set of fabric or a baju kurung for the bride-to-be.
  • A pair of shoes or a handbag.
  • Fruit, chocolates or cake as the food tray.
  • The bride's side returns one tray more, following the same odd-number custom.

The ring and the financial side

The engagement ring is placed by the mother or a female representative of the groom's family, not by the groom-to-be himself. This differs from western practice and often surprises couples planning for the first time.

Belanja hangus, the contribution towards the bride's family costs, is usually discussed at the meminang stage too. It is not the same as mas kahwin: belanja hangus goes towards the cost of the majlis, while mas kahwin is the obligatory dowry set at a state-fixed rate. Discuss the two separately so nothing is misunderstood.

How long to stay engaged, and what comes next

Six to twelve months is the most practical engagement length. It is long enough to book a hall and a caterer in peak season, but not so long that planning stalls in the middle.

Once the date is agreed, the first job you can actually finish is the invitation. A digital engagement card can be ready the same day, shared as a single link with close family, and edited again if details change — without changing the link you already sent.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between merisik, meminang and bertunang?

Merisik is the initial enquiry about whether the woman is already spoken for. Meminang is the formal proposal where the date, mas kahwin and hantaran are negotiated. Bertunang is the ring ceremony that seals the agreement.

How many hantaran trays for an engagement?

Three to five trays from the groom's side is enough, with one more in return. The full set is normally saved for the akad nikah.

Who places the engagement ring?

The mother or a female representative of the groom's family, not the groom-to-be himself. This is Malay custom and differs from western practice.

How long should an engagement last?

Six to twelve months is the most practical range. It gives enough time to book a hall and caterer in peak season without an overly long wait.
