Kelantan Wedding Customs: From Merisik to Makan Beradab

A Kelantan wedding follows the same Malay outline as anywhere else in the peninsula: merisik, meminang, akad nikah, bersanding. The differences are in the details. Engagements tend to be short, the state sets no minimum mas kahwin, berinai is traditionally split across separate nights, and the invitation itself used to be delivered on foot. Here is the sequence, what each step involves, and what still gets practised in 2026.

What sets a Kelantan wedding apart

If you are marrying into a Kelantan family from KL or Johor, the first surprise is usually the pace. The state cultural department (JKKN Kelantan) records an old saying, "hari ini bertunang, esok kahwin", engaged today and married tomorrow. Families saw a long engagement as an invitation for gossip, so they moved quickly from the proposal to the nikah. Most couples now take a few months, which is what any caterer will need anyway. The instinct to keep the gap short has stayed.

The second surprise is money. Kelantan is one of the states that does not fix a mas kahwin rate, so the amount is whatever the two families agree. That conversation carries more weight here than in states where the rate is a formality of a few ringgit.

Merisik and meminang

Merisik is the first step. Someone from the man's side visits the woman's family to find out whether she is spoken for, and, in the older practice JKKN Kelantan describes, to get a sense of her manners and family while being served a meal. Today it is usually a phone call between mothers, followed by a short visit.

Some older Kelantan families still treat merisik as a tanda, a sign that the woman is now taken. Accounts from Kelantan brides mention parents arriving with a piece of cloth or a ring as that marker, and only the parents attending. Meminang then settles the details: the date, the mas kahwin, the hantaran trays and how big the majlis will be. Many couples now run merisik, meminang and the ring in one afternoon to save a second trip, which is common across Malaysia.

Mas kahwin in Kelantan: agreed by the families

Most states publish a fixed mas kahwin. Johor's is RM22.50 and Selangor's is RM300 for a first marriage. Kelantan, like Terengganu, Kedah and Perlis, leaves it to the families. Check with the Jabatan Hal Ehwal Agama Islam Kelantan when you file the nikah paperwork, because the figure you agree goes on the record.

You may hear Kelantan women say they have no hantaran but they do have mas kahwin. It is half a joke. Hantaran trays and belanja still get exchanged in most families, but the mas kahwin is the bride's own property and it gets discussed seriously. Talk about the two numbers on separate days if you can. Mixing them into one lump sum is how misunderstandings start.

  • Mas kahwin: compulsory, belongs to the bride, no state minimum in Kelantan.
  • Belanja or wang hantaran: a contribution towards the bride's side's costs, negotiated separately.
  • Hantaran trays: gifts exchanged on the day, usually an odd number, with the bride's side returning one more.

Berinai curi, berinai kecil and the nights before

Traditional Kelantan weddings stage the henna over more than one night. Berinai curi happens about three nights before the wedding and is for the closest family only. Berinai kecil follows a night later, two nights out, and the circle widens to relatives, neighbours and friends. The classic Malay sequence then ends with berinai besar, the public one.

Few couples keep all three now. A single berinai night with family and close friends is more typical, often the night before the akad. If your mother-in-law asks about berinai curi, though, that is the one she means: quiet, close family, and usually the night the bride's hands get their first coat.

Makan beradab and the bertandang

Makan beradab, sometimes called makan berdamai, is a meal the newlyweds eat together at the main table after the ceremony. Only close family sit in. The table is set with more food than the people at it can finish, and the couple eat at the same time as a sign that they will get along. It is short and a lot of photographers miss it, so tell yours it is happening.

A few days to a week after the nikah, the bride is brought to the groom's family home for the majlis bertandang, which Kelantan families also call menyambut menantu. JKKN Kelantan describes a procession with kompang, a doa led by an elder, and a meal hosted by the groom's family. The bride's side traditionally brought mats and bedding as gifts. That part is rarer now.

Memadah: inviting guests in person

JKKN Kelantan lists adat memadah as its own custom: going from house to house to invite relatives, neighbours and the kampung in person. For a Kelantan family the visit was the invitation. A card left without a visit could read as a slight.

Plenty of Kelantan families still memadah for the people who matter most, older relatives and the imam's household. Everyone else gets a card, and increasingly that card is a link on WhatsApp. Pay attention to the wording on it. Kelantan guests tend to read "Walimatulurus" or "Majlis Perkahwinan" as a normal wedding where an envelope is expected, while "Majlis Kesyukuran" often signals a smaller thanksgiving where people bring sugar or a small gift instead. Pick the title on purpose.

Planning a Kelantan wedding in 2027

Kelantan schools are in Kumpulan A, so their holidays run a day ahead of most of the country. The 2027 mid-year break is 21 May to 5 June and the year-end break starts on 3 December. Those weeks fill up first with kenduri in the state.

Kelantan's weekend is Friday and Saturday. If half your guests work in the Klang Valley on a Monday to Friday week, Saturday is the only day both groups are free, and it is the day every hall in Kota Bharu is booked. Settle the date at the meminang and send the save the date soon after.

Frequently asked questions

How much is mas kahwin in Kelantan?

Kelantan does not set a fixed rate. The amount is agreed between the two families and recorded during the nikah. Confirm the current rules with the Jabatan Hal Ehwal Agama Islam Kelantan before the akad.

What is berinai curi?

The first henna night in a traditional Kelantan wedding, held about three nights before the wedding for the closest family only. Berinai kecil follows a night later with relatives and neighbours.

What is makan beradab?

A meal the bride and groom share at the main table after the ceremony, with close family only. Eating together at the same time is meant to show the couple will get along.

What does adat memadah mean?

Inviting guests in person by visiting their homes. Many Kelantan families still do it for elders and close relatives and send cards or digital invitations to everyone else.

Are Kelantan engagements short?

They used to be very short, and the saying "hari ini bertunang, esok kahwin" comes from that. Couples now usually allow a few months so they can book a hall and caterer.
