How to use it

Start with the guest count. Catering is charged per head, so this one number moves the total more than anything else. If both families are still negotiating the list, try 400 and then 600 and see what the gap looks like.

Then fill in each category. The hall, pelamin, outfits and photographer are fixed costs and barely change whether 300 or 700 people turn up. Catering gets multiplied by the guest count.

Where the starting numbers come from

They're rough figures for a community-hall kenduri with buffet catering, not any vendor's price list. Catering in the Klang Valley costs differently from Kota Bharu, and a fresh-flower pelamin can run double a silk-flower one.

If the total is too high

Trim the guest list first. 100 fewer guests at RM15 a head saves RM1,500, more than you will win haggling over the pelamin.
Ask the caterer to quote a shorter menu. Dropping one dish adds up fast across 500 plates.
Hold one combined reception for both families, if both families agree.
Use a digital card. RM10 covers every guest with no printing or postage, and RSVP lets you lock the headcount before you pay the caterer the balance.

Does the calculator save my numbers?

No. Everything runs in your browser. Close the tab and it resets.

Where do door gifts and bunga telur go?

Put them under 'Other'. Door gifts at RM3 each for 500 guests means adding RM1,500 there.

What is a normal cost per guest?

It depends on the menu and the venue. With the starting figures here, a 500-guest hall kenduri comes to about RM47 a head. Enter your own quotes to get your real number.

Should mas kahwin be in the wedding budget?

Yes, since it comes out of the same pocket. Each state sets its own rate, so check with your state religious office first.
